About

A Legacy of Karate, Community & Family

Our Story

Higashi Shotokan Karate has a history rooted in passion, dedication, and a love for sharing the martial arts.

Nearly 50 years ago, Sensei Terry began his own karate journey under Sensei Phillip Dingman. Over more than two decades of training, he developed a deep passion for Shotokan Karate and a desire to pass his knowledge on to others.

In 1988, that vision became a reality when Sensei Terry began teaching karate from his own basement, establishing what would become West St. Paul Karate. As the club continued to grow, it moved from the basement to a community gym and, in 2008, to the Access Centre at the West St. Paul Recreation Site.

Today, that legacy continues. Karate has become a family affair, with Sensei Terry's son, Sensei Derrick, joining him in teaching and sharing their knowledge with the next generation of students.

After more than 30 years of teaching and building a strong karate community, we are excited to begin the next chapter as Higashi Shotokan Karate, Now located at Park City West Community Club.

While our name and location have evolved, our commitment remains the same: to teach traditional Shotokan Karate, build confidence and discipline, and create a welcoming community where students of all ages can learn and grow.
